The Nucleotide database is a collection of sequences from several sources, including GenBank, RefSeq, TPA and PDB. Genome, gene and transcript sequence data provide the foundation for biomedical research and discovery.

The GenBank database is designed to provide and encourage access within the scientific community to the most up to date and comprehensive DNA sequence information.

GenBank has become an important database for research in biological fields and has grown in recent years at an exponential rate by doubling roughly every 18 months. [4][5][3] GenBank is built by direct submissions from individual laboratories, as well as from bulk submissions from large-scale sequencing centers.
