The Gemini Awards succeeded the ACTRA Awards and were merged with the Genie Awards in 2013 to form the Canadian Screen Awards.

First held in 1986 to replace the ACTRA Award, the ceremony celebrated Canadian television productions with awards in 87 categories, along with other special awards such as lifetime achievement awards.

The Gemini Awards honor the English language achievements in Canadian television in contrast to the Prix Gémeaux which are to honor the French language achievements. The Gemini sculpture has been created by designer Scott Thornley.

The 26th Gemini Awards was held on September 7, 2011 to honour achievements in Canadian television. The ceremony was broadcast live from the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, and aired on CBC Television.
