May 2, 2022 · Work continued throughout the war, with the most advanced being the GAZ-75, also named the SU-85 (not to be confused with the T-34 based SU-85), an 18-tonne tank with 82 mm of frontal armor and an 85 mm D-5S-85 gun. It was designed in just 26 days, with I.V. Gavlov as lead designer.

At the end of this period, the engineers of Gorkiy created the GAZ-75, the last of the Russian Hetzer. The GAZ-75 had a weight inferior to 18 tons but was endowed with a frontal armor of 75-90 mm while the one of the SU-85 producted in mass was only of 45 mm.

There is hardly a fan of armoured vehicle who, upon hearing the name "Hetzer", would not conjure up an image of that vehicle. This low "coffin", armed with a powerful 75 mm gun, became one of the most successful combat vehicles of the Third Reich.

May 21, 2020 · The creation of both the SU-74-B and SU-74-D made it possible to develop a new type of SPG, the GAZ-75, in a record time of 26 days. The vehicle passed factory trials and was presented for trials at the NIABG proving grounds in December of 1943.

Attempts to continue improving the armament of light SPGs did not die with the GAZ-75. The factory's design bureau decided to design an improvement to the SU-76M instead of a whole new vehicle in May of 1944.

The only offensive armament of the GAZ-75 was the D-5S-85A rifled tank gun of the 85 mm caliber. This artillery system, specially designed for installation on a medium tank, had the ballistics of an anti-aircraft 85-mm gun, which assumed good armor penetration.
