The RF-8, or GAZ-98, was an aerosan used by the Soviet Union during the Second World War and developed by Gorki Narkorechflota. The GAZ-98K was a version with a more powerful GAZ Shvetsov M-11 five-cylinder air-cooled 110-hp radial aviation engine in place of the standard automotive engine.

At the end of December 1941, the first production lot of RF-8 aerosleds, which received the factory designation GAZ-98, had already arrived at many sectors of the front. They were used to form combat aerosled battalions. In most Soviet documents this vehicle named RF-8-GAZ-98.

RF-8-GAZ-98 Snowmobile. The RF-8-GAZ-98 aerosled was designed to run on four skis, two of which were steered. The hull was semi-enclosed, two-place, with a front-rear positioning of the crew's seats.

8-GAZ-98 aerosled. The first aerosled units appeared in January 1942 in the Northwest Front, on many sectors of the fronts in the Moscow area, and in the area of Staraya Russa.

The second designation was GAZ - 98 (according to the applied motor). Plans were passed in November 1941 and the first machines from předsérie were delivered in December 1941. Were they armed with battalions of snowmobiles (aerosannyje battalions).

Apr 16, 2022 · The RF-8-Gaz-98 was fast, stable effective; and was perfect for reconnaissance, communication, patrolling and raiding roles especially in support of ski troops; often operating behind enemy lines. In the winter of 1942/43 a large number were fitted with aircraft radial engines and designated (RF-8) Gaz-98K.

The RF-8-GAZ-98 Aerosled was produced from January 1942 with approximately 2000 being produced before the end of the war and continued in service for some time post war.
