Gates Pass is a mountain pass along the crest of the Tucson Mountains. The road through the pass is a scenic route west of Tucson, Arizona. The road from the east is West Anklam Road which merges with West Speedway Boulevard in the city just east of North Camino De Oeste.

The pass offers an amazing view of the valley below looking down on Old Tucson Studios (which is closed) as well as the second largest reservation in AZ (sorry, the name escapes me). The vastness of the landscape below is breathtaking. The hikes are terrific as well.

It offers an overlook and several trails as well as nearby paths to explore that lead up higher in the surrounding mountains.

May 14, 2024 · Gates Pass Overlook and Trailhead area is located in the Tucson Mountain Park, just east of Saguaro National Park West. This area provides access to numerous trails, parking, restrooms, and a wonderful place to watch sunset.

Today, Gates Pass Road is an extension of Speedway west through Tucson Mountain Park to the attractions in the Avra Valley: Old Tucson, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Saguaro National Park West. It’s one of the most scenic drives in all of Arizona.

Gates open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. This paved staging area is located within Tucson Mountain Park's Gates Pass Overlook. It has space for 50 vehicles and serves the Gates Pass Trail.
