When perfectly ripe and mature, Gary will give off a strong tropical aroma that evokes images of sun-tan lotion and/or Piña Coladas. Slicing into the fruit will reveal yellowish-orange, fiberless flesh with an incredibly soft and melting texture.

In the 1990s, Gary Zill used Zill-80 as one of the maternal parents for his breeding project, and it is a parent of several newer cultivars including Fruit Punch, 36-8 (India/Super Alphonso), Edgar, Carla, Marlys, Crystal, C-17 and others.

Jan 5, 2025 · The Gary mango originated in the 1970s as a seedling of the ‘Carrie’ mango, with its pollen parent believed to be the ‘Pettigrew’ cultivar. It was selected by the Zill family of Boynton Beach, Florida, and named after horticulturist and nursery owner Gary Zill, who has been instrumental in developing numerous superior mango varieties.

Gary is thought to be a cross between the Carrie and Pettigrew cultivars, and was selected by the Zill family of Boynton Beach in the 1970s as a random seedling.
