Gamalama is a near-conical stratovolcano that comprises the entire Ternate island in Indonesia. The island lies off the western shore of Halmahera island in the north of the Maluku Islands.

Gamalama volcano is located on the subdiction zone of the Pacific and South Asia tectonic plates. Gamalama volcano has a history of explosive eruptions followed by lava flows.

Gamalama still spews out lava, ash and smoke periodically, but it is possible to climb the peak for stupendous views. It's an eight-hour round-trip and a tough ascent even if you are fit.
