Oct 27, 2024 · Hamfast Gamgee, also known as the Gaffer, was a Hobbit of the Shire, and the father of Samwise Gamgee of the Fellowship of the Ring. He was the gardener of Bag End before he passed the title onto Sam.

Hamfast "The Gaffer" Gamgee was a Hobbit of the Shire, a gardener by trade and father of Samwise Gamgee. Hamfast was the son of Hobson "Roper" Gamgee. He married Bell Goodchild, with whom he had six children, including Samwise Gamgee, his youngest son. He was a gardener on the Baggins property at Bag End for many years.

However, recently Lotho, the son of the new owner, dismissed him. During the Farmers Faire old Gaffer is found at a large mushroom tent next to the Three Farthing Stone.

He was Bilbo ’s gardener by profession until Samwise succeeded his place to become a gardener to the Baggins family. He was also known as the “ Gaffer ”. In Hobbit ’s old English language, Hamfast could be translated to “home-fast” meaning “stay at home”.

Sam became a Hobbit of great bravery who accompanied Frodo Baggins on his quest to destroy the One Ring in Mordor. Hamfast Gamgee attended Bilbo's Farewell Party held in 3001. He was old at the time, and his joints grew stiff. He earned the title "Old Gaffer."

Mar 26, 2023 · "Gaffer" here carries its original sense of "old man". This is why, in "The Grey Havens", you find it used together with "gammer", which means old woman. Meanwhile the labour of repair went on apace, and Sam was kept very busy. Hobbits can work like bees when the mood and the need comes on them.
