The Great Western Railway (GWR) 1500 Class is a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive. Despite being a GWR Hawksworth design, all ten (nos 1500–1509) were completed under the administration of the Western Region of British Railways in 1949, just after Nationalisation.

The '1500' class of heavy shunter was an unusual design for the Great Western as it was fitted with outside cylinders, Walschaerts valve gear and no running platform. In addition, most of the separate parts were welded instead of riveted together.

There were many classes and types of pannier tanks, including various absorbed engines and small classes for special purposes. However, the predominant batches can be roughly divided into two main groups, large and small, and in both a line of development can be seen.

Other designs included three designs of 0-6-0PT: the taper boilered 9400 class; the 1500 class with outside Walschaerts valve gear and no running plate designed for pilot work around large stations; and the very light 1600 Class.

The 10 locomotives built were different from all other tank designs on the GWR. Above the running plate level they were similar to the 9400 class but the 1500 class had no running plate and had outside cylinders with Walschaert valve gear.

GWR Great Western Railway Pannier 1501 is the only surviving example of a GWR Great Western Railway 1500 class 0-6-0PT shunting engine.
