The GeForce 200 series is a series of Tesla -based GeForce graphics processing units developed by Nvidia. The GeForce 200 series introduced Nvidia's second generation of the Tesla microarchitecture, Nvidia's unified shader architecture; the first major update to it since introduced with the GeForce 8 series.

GeForce GTX 200 GPUs are the first to implement NVIDIA’s second-generation unified shader and compute architecture. The GeForce GTX 200 GPUs include significantly enhanced features and deliver, on average, 1.5× the performance of GeForce 8 or 9 Series GPUs.

NVIDIA's GT200 GPU uses the Tesla 2.0 architecture and is made using a 65 nm production process at TSMC. With a die size of 576 mm² and a transistor count of 1,400 million it is a very big chip. GT200 supports DirectX 11.1 (Feature Level 10_0). For GPU compute applications, OpenCL version 1.1 and CUDA 1.3 can be used.

Jun 16, 2008 · NVIDIA is introducing two GT200 parts today along with slightly tweaked branding. The new brand is called the GeForce GTX, and the first two cards are the GTX 280 and GTX 260.

Like GeForce 8 and GeForce 9 the new GeForce GTX 200 series is also a DirectX 10 (i.e., shader 4.0) hardware, but using a different architecture. Let’s see what is new.
