The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1989. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C.

The SD40-2 has a 16 cylinder, 3,000 h.p. diesel engine which drives an AC generator. It rides on a pair of three axle Flex-coil trunks, with truck centers 43' 6" apart and an overall length of 68' 10". These units are not equipped with dynamic-brakes.

Canadian National 5285 and Grand Trunk 5933 lead a westbound train along the North end of Michigan State University. Freight consist led by Wisconsin Central #3014 creeps over the bridge spanning the Mississippi River from Dubuque, IA to East Dubuque.
