The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2] .

In the late 1980s, the GTW decided to rebuild a portion of its aging GP9 fleet, which even then was the backbone of the Trunk's fleet, into modern GP9-equivalents. Original GTW units, along with some that had been reassigned from the Central Vermont and Grand Trunk Railways, were selected to be rebuilt.
