
What is the difference between a GP7 and a GP9?
Apr 30, 2024 · I recently purchased a common Rock Island Proto 2000 GP. On the box it says it’s a GP9 series 2. But it looks more like a GP7 to me. I stripped the paint off and primed it because I’m going to re-paint it in RI blue and white. I’m just wondering what exactly this would be? Aside from a HP increase what are the visual differences?

It was replaced in the EMD catalog in 1954 by the 1750 hp GP9. A GP7 has 2 full rows of louvers at the rear of the carbody, and 3 single louvers on the battery boxes under the cab.
