GJ 1214 b (sometimes Gliese 1214 b, [6] also named Enaiposha since 2023 [2]) is an exoplanet that orbits the star GJ 1214, discovered in December 2009. Its parent star is 48 light-years (15 pc) from the Sun, in the constellation Ophiuchus.

Mar 28, 2025 · GJ 1214 b is a Neptune-like exoplanet that orbits a M-type star. Its mass is 8.41 Earths, it takes 1.6 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.01505 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2009.

Discovered by the MEarth Project and investigated further by the HARPS spectrograph on ESO’s 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla, GJ 1214 b was the second super-Earth exoplanet for which astronomers determined the mass and radius, giving vital clues about its structure. It was also the first super-Earth around which an atmosphere was found.
