Sep 23, 2021 · My favourite is Dave’s Picks #34 — Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami, FL, 23/06/74, but you already have that so … I’d also highly recommend Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 3: Wall Of Sound — State Fairgrounds, Des Moines, IA, 16/06/74 and Freedom Hall, Louisville, KY, 18/06/74. One phenomenal release, which I see you’ve ordered. You’re in for a treat.
Grateful Dead-Pacific Northwest-73-74/19 disc box set
Jun 12, 2018 · It's a monster...as a complete show, 5-21-74 has to be one of the more underrated shows out there from start to finish. Lots of unique qualities all throughout and that Playin in the Band speaks for itself. Just my $0.02. And regarding top sounding 74 shows, the recent DVP 6-23-74 stood out to me as one of the finest sounding releases.

Mar 24, 2025 · That's all cool. One thing I find amazing about the GD is how many different types of listeners they draw. I would say the '72-74 period jams are closer to late post-bop jazz or the avant-garde than to the psychedelic stuff they were doing in '68-69. The band's overall skill level jumped dramatically from all the touring they did in the early '70s.

Apr 11, 2014 · I'm listening to the PiTB from 5/21/74, haven't heard this in about 7 years. I didn't remember it was this incredible, actually.
Grateful Dead best ever China Cat Sunflower> I Know You Rider …
Jan 16, 2021 · 8/5/74 - Like @US Blues mentions, the band just goes off on the jam of this one. Hard to vote against any '74 versions let alone one from my home town of Philly but there is just enough that isn't just exactly perfect in this version. Winner: 5/3/72

May 2, 2023 · '74 isn't very languid, but at times it got more jazz-influenced. Have a gander at this madness (as much as you like), but pay attention starting at ~11:00. It moves from something akin to free jazz to fusion at about 11:50, then proceeds to a frenetic Jerry solo starting at 12:43:

Apr 11, 2014 · One thing I never feel like I almost hear people talk about is pre-hiatus 1/2 Steps. Do people like them? I guess it just got more Jerry in it after the hiatus, but one could say the same about Jack Straw and people praise pre-hiatus versions....some of them are really good, anyway...the band really sounds together on it, and sometimes I like them as much as the better post-hiatus ones (for ...
Grateful Dead: Reviews of Dave's Picks and other releases
Mar 21, 2016 · Dave’s Picks Volume 9: 5/14/74 – Adams Field House, U of Montana, Missoula, MT – 3 stars When it comes to this series one notices two things – they are always complete shows, and the shows are (usually) “off the beaten path”. This show looks good on paper (WRS>Dark Star>China Doll) but is generally unexciting.
