The Focke-Wulf Fw 190, nicknamed Würger [b] is a German single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank at Focke-Wulf in the late 1930s and widely used during World War II. Along with its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 , the Fw 190 became the backbone of the Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force) of the Luftwaffe .

The Focke-Wulf FW-190 was widely believed to be the best fighter aircraft of World War II. As the war went on the FW-190 was manufactured in no fewer than 40 different models. The appearance of the new aircraft over France in 1941 was a rude surprise to the Allied air forces.

It served on all the German fronts: Eastern Front, Western Front, North African Campaign and the Defence of the Reich. When it was first introduced in August 1941, it quickly proved to be superior in all but turn radius to the Royal Air Force (RAF) front-line fighter, the Spitfire Mk. V variant. [1] .
