Frome (/ ˈfruːm / ⓘ FROOM) is a town and civil parish in Somerset, England, on uneven high ground at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills and on the River Frome, 13 miles (21 km) south of Bath. The population of the parish was 28,559 in 2021. [1] Frome was one of the largest towns in Somerset until the Industrial Revolution.

The name Frome, pronounced Froome, comes from the Old English word ‘ffraw’, meaning fair, fine or brisk, describing the flow of the river. The town can trace its history back to 685 when St Aldhelm founded a monastery here and a settlement grew up around the river crossing.
