Nov 29, 2010 · The Freedom Riders were a group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses in the 1960s to challenge laws mandating segregation in public transportation terminals in the Southern United States. The first Freedom Ride in 1961 resulted in violence against the riders in Alabama and Mississippi.
The Freedom Rides. The Supreme Court had upheld the constitutionality of banning the segregation of passengers on buses traveling interstate and then extended the precedent to segregation of interstate transportation facilities, including bus terminals.
