May 16, 2005 · Homer Formby used to say... I remember part of what Homer Formby used to say would work for his refinisher. It was equal parts of Acetone, Benzene, Xylene (or maybe Xylol) and Tolulene. I think that was all that he mentioned.

Feb 5, 2004 · The Formby's stuff you're referring to ("Tung Oil Finish") is not just tung oil, it's a tung oil/varnish mix. This is a common point of confusion, so I'm just reiterating the difference. I don't worry too much about what brand I use.

Sep 9, 2011 · On one smaller part and another test piece I tried Formby’s Tung Oil Finish over the BLO. The Formby’s can says not to use it over finishes other than penetrating oils. I assumed this meant it would work. However, only a few minutes after starting to apply the Formby’s it turned very very tacky, something it doesn’t do normally.

Dec 13, 2009 · Now lots of people get fooled by Tung Oil Finish, such as the Formby's product. That isn't oil of any sort, it is a varnish, it can be left to develop a film, offers considerable moisture resistance, and will eventually rub out to a rather shiny surface, though no oil varnish can even approach the look of true French polish.

After my long winded answer, I'll just note that if you used the Formby's or other wiping varnish tung oil finish you might as well just add more of the same--it would be quite water resistant, as are all oil-based varnishes. Wiping varnishes might want about 9 coats (equivalent to 3 brushed on coats) for full protection.

Jun 16, 2005 · Formby's Tung Oil Finish is a varnish, not a oil/varnish mix. By itself it offers virtually the same protection as the Minwax varnish, and is probably a bit harder. The Minwax varnish resists abrasion a bit better, so if this project is going to be walked on go ahead with the polyurethane varnish.

To rub it out, first be sure you have 5-6 coats applied. Let it fully cure for 3-4 weeks to let it get hard enough to sand. Start with 400 grit to flatten the surface.

May 5, 2008 · In that case, you might as well just continue with the Formby's, which is a fairly decent wiping varnish, rather than shifting to a different wiping varnish. Unless there is a specific need, you are almost always better using just one material rather than creating multiple layer of different materials.
