The Ford Sierra is a mid-size/ large family car manufactured and marketed by Ford of Europe from 1982–1993. It was designed by Uwe Bahnsen, Robert Lutz and Patrick Le Quément, and was noted for its aerodynamic styling. It has a drag coefficient of 0.34, a significant improvement over its predecessors.

Did you know Ford built a Sierra XR8 with Mustang power? When we think of the Ford Sierra, the fire-breathing Cosworth/RS500 springs to mind. As the dominant force in local and world touring cars, even us Aussies got behind the idea of a four-cylinder, and not a V8, in top-flight tin-top racing in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Fitted with a 5-litre Mustang V8, complete with 4-barrel Holley carburettor, to say that the performance and noise from the XR8 is startling is something of an understatement. In factory trim, that engine offers 216hp and 374Nm.

The XR8 featured a Ford 302 V8 and suitably upgraded drivetrain that was produced in the required quantity to allow the car to be homoligated for local racing.

What is a Ford Sierra XR8? It’s powered by a 5.0-litre Ford Windsor V8 that comes from the Fox-body era Mustang, but with an additional 20-25bhp thanks to the absence of US emissions gubbins. This all adds up to 216bhp, which in modern parlance is only middlingly warm.
