Fokir is a poor fisherman whom Piya meets while still in the care of the forest guard and Mejda. Fokir rescues Piya after she falls into the water, and Piya feels as though she can trust him because he's with his young son, Tutul.

Fokir. Fokir is an impoverished fisherman who rescues Piya when she falls into the water. Typically seen with his young son, Tutul, Fokir is kind and welcoming to Piya, eager to help her, and dedicated to his family despite his frequent conflicts with his wife, Moyna.

Fokir dies not long after when he's hit and crushed by something large. Piya manages to take his boat in the direction of Lusibari the next day, and explains what happened to Kanai and Horen when she finds them coming to get her on the Megha .

As the storm hits, Fokir and Piya take refuge on a tiny island. Still unable to communicate with words, Fokir and Piya tie themselves to a tree’s highest branch to ride out the storm. They survive a massive tidal wave, but when the wind changes, Fokir is crushed by a heavy object and killed.

Kusum and her young son Fokir survive, but Kusum is later killed. Impressed with Fokir, Piya hires him for a week to help her survey the dolphins in the region. Kanai comes along to serve as a translator, and they bring Nilima and Nirmal's friend Horen , who owns a large boat.

Fokir is Piya’s river guide and the character who pulls the novel’s many disparate personalities together. He is Kusum’s son, Moyna’s husband, and Kanai’s rival for Piya’s affections. He is Piya’s savior, repeatedly, Kanai’s adversary, and the character with the closest, deepest ties to the Sundarbans themselves.

Piya is studying the behaviour of river dolphins and enlists the help of an illiterate fisherman, Fokir. Kanai has returned to this wild, isolated delta region at the request of his aunt in order to read a manuscript left to him by his dead uncle.
