Fokienia is a genus of conifer tree belonging to the cypress family. In its characteristics, Fokienia is intermediate between the genera of Chamaecyparis and Calocedrus.

Fokienia hodginsii, commonly known as fokienia or Fujian cypress, is a columnar needled evergreen tree with a pyramidal crown. It is in the cypress family. It typically matures to 40-60‘ tall and to 25-35’ wide, but occasionally rises to as much as 100’ tall. It is native to alpine forests in China, northern Laos, and Vietnam.

Thomas is a monotypic genus of the Cupressoideae Rich. ex Sweet (Cupressaceae), native to subtropical evergreen mesophytic forests in South China, northern Laos and Vietnam. The fossil record of Fokienia is very scanty, with only one known occurrence of foliage in the Oligocene of Longjing, Jilin, China.

An evergreen tree ultimately 40 to 50 ft high, with a trunk up to 3 ft in girth, without down in all its parts. The ultimate branchlets are arranged in one plane to form tripinnate, frond-like sprays.

Fokienia has recently been used for climatic studies aimed at improving our understanding of past variability in the SE Asian monsoon and El Nino events. Its great longevity (ca. 1500 years at least) and sensitivity to moisture makes it an ideal candidate for such studies.

To Libocedrus (Calocedrus) macrolepis especially it is closely alike in foliage. It is a monotypic genus and a native of China. The specimen at Borde Hill, Sussex, in Gores Wood, measures 10 × 1 ⁄ 2 ft (1981).
