Lab JS is an educational application for learning the principles of genetic inheritance. Users design crosses between female and male fruit flies carrying one or more genetic mutations.

FlyLab is a very versatile program; it can be used to learn elementary genetic principles such as dominance, recessiveness, and Mendelian ratios, or more complex concepts such as sex-linkage, epistasis, recombination, and genetic mapping.

The first result of these efforts is the popular program FlyLab JS. Students can use this application to understand how genetic traits are inherited by designing and analyzing experiments involving fruit flies with visible mutations.

I encourage you to play around with the Virtual Flylab to learn how it works. Later in the term, you will get specific assignments to do "experiments", and to analyze and report your data.

Jan 26, 2001 · Click on the button that says "Start FlyLab" and wait for the program to download to your computer (this may take a couple of minutes). When finished downloading you should see a a gray drawing of two fruit flies. As in VF 1, design a female fly with shaven bristles and a male fly with brown eyes and then mate them.

To begin an experiment, you must first design the phenotypes for the flies that will be mated. In addition to wild-type flies, 29 different mutations of the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, are included in FlyLab. The 29 mutations are actual known mutations in Drosophila.
