Feb 1, 2010 · On a smaller fly I would imagine the longer hairs from rabbit could be used as it is fine and supple. The main key to a good fly is proportion! A fish is far less pickey about a fly than the fisheman! Another option available, I assume you are tying some sort of streamer, is to substitute marabou for the hair.

Dec 23, 2010 · First off, although some folks have recommended RIT dye (including a rather famous trout fly tyer from Colorado), it is a very poor choice for dying fly tying materials. RIT is a so-called "union dye", which means it is composed of different types of dyes, most of which don't work at all on protein-based materials used in fly tying.

Jun 2, 2008 · While it may be true that if you substitute other materials for something in a "standard" pattern, then you may not actually be tying a true "whatever-bug", there is certainly not any formal laws against it. There are lots of fibers that will make a Wulff pattern wing and not take anything away from the fish catching ability of the fly.

Aug 15, 2013 · At one time I used tying wax but have stopped using the stuff. If I'm tying a dry fly with coarse material, I use a paste type floatant. For everything else, I've found a fingertip moistener called Gatherette is all I need. Gatherette is sold at office supply stores. It dries quickly on your fingertips and isn't nearly as messy as tying wax.

At such events, I try to (and usually do) remember to bring along enough pillows/pads to raise my seating position to something approximating this ideal.
