Most bats living in Florida prefer to roost in mature trees, dead trees (snags), or in caves. However, many bats take up residence in buildings, or other manmade structures, due to loss of habitat. Bat houses provide alternative roost sites for Florida's colonial bat species.

The University of Florida bat house, which is located on campus just north of Lake Alice, was constructed in 1991. It consists of a single gabled roof, the base of which is situated twenty feet above the ground on five wood poles.
