
Does NTFS compression slow SSD/flash performance?
May 24, 2003 · Flash/SSD is not so heavily affected by fragmentation, so the only real concern is the CPU demand. Can someone else check this for me? If you have an SSD, all you need to do is NTFS compress your Program Files directory and see if performance noticeably decreases.

Jul 2, 2012 · USB flash drives are essentially low performance SSDs; the NAND is organized into a couple of channels at best (low total throughput) and is increasingly TLC NAND (lower lifetime), and the controllers are simple devices that don't take the kind of care SSD controllers do to hide latency and hold down write amplification.

Jul 8, 2011 · The cost of an external SSD, or making your own external 2.5" USB 3.0 SSD, shouldn't be too much more than whatever this cost you. That reads like it's basically a 256GB USB flash drive, or they also cheaped out on RAM, so it can't hold enough of the mapping tables w/o going out to the drive.

The answer is that the data recorder - by writing to successively sectors - makes the best use of the inbuilt block erase/write circuits and the external (to the flash memory - but still internal to the SSD) buffer / cache.

Dec 3, 2022 · I bought a "2TB" SSD off AliExpress, ran h2testw on it, and it died after writing about 1TB to it. This and the way writing slowed down suggests to me that it was a 1TB QLC drive (which is also reasonably consistent with the price I paid).

I have an Asus P8P67 motherboard, and the manual says that Asus EZ Flash should be run from a USB flash drive, but I don't have a reliable USB flash drive around right now.
