The origin of the current flag of Spain is the naval ensign of 1785, Pabellón de la Marina de Guerra, by Decrée of Charles III of Spain, where it is also referred as national flag. It was chosen by Charles III himself from 12 different flags designed by Antonio Valdés y Bazán. [1]

The original nine stripes of this flag represented the nine colonies that convened the “Stamp Act Congress” in 1765. After repeal of the Act in 1766, the flag became associated with the Sons of Liberty and became known to the British as the “Rebellious Stripes.”

In 1785, Harmar ordered the construction of Fort Harmar at the junction of the Ohio River and the Muskingum River, near near present day Marietta. During construction a crude drawing was made of the walls, probably by workmen, which showed this flag.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution, which said that the flag would be made up of thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white, five-pointed stars on a blue field.

That flag was first carried to the East Indian seas in the Enterprise (an Albany-built vessel), Captain Stewart Dean, in 1785. When Vermont and Kentucky were added to the union of States the flag was altered.
