The Fish Commission eventually had 10 fish cars; several state fish commissions built their own fish cars to transport freshwater fish to U.S. locations.

The fish cars seemed a better means of safely shipping more fish, greater distances. In 1883, the State Legislature appropriated $5,000 to purchase a fancy fish car for Wisconsin fish stocking programs.

The modern "Fish Car Era" was ushered in with the delivery in 1916 of the first steel car, Fish Car No. 7, which had a fish-carrying capacity of 50 percent more than the existing wooden models.

Fish cars were built to passenger train standards so they could travel at higher speeds than the typical freight trains of the day. Also, by putting fish cars into passenger trains, the cars were held at terminals far less than if they were hauled in freight trains.
