Today, Maersk connects every part of the world. But in 1928 there was just one Maersk Line route covering three countries: the USA, Japan, and The Philippines. New routes into South East Asia followed, first to China, then Thailand, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India and the Persian Gulf.

1928: A.P. Møller begins the first liner service under the Name Mærsk Line with 6 motor ships, each 6000-7000 tdw on the Trans Pacific Route Far East – US West coast and via the Panama Canal to Baltimore.

Feb 21, 2019 · Maersk Line’s first service between the USA and Asia was started in 1928; the ships called ports in the USA, in Japan and in The Philippines, and later China. First on a schedule with monthly departures, later every two weeks. One route and only a few ships.

In 1928, the first regular line service with monthly services started under the brand of Maersk Line. Until that date, it had focused on non-scheduled trade, where ships operated in the spot market and there were no scheduled port calls.

In 1975, Maersk Line launched its first fully containerised service. The ADRIAN MAERSK left Port Elizabeth on the US East Coast with a cargo of 385 containers. Containerisation revolutionised shipping and made it possible to transport goods more quickly and efficiently around the world.

In 1973, Maersk Line acquired its first container ship, the Japanese-built Svendborg Maersk. Nineteen years later, and Maersk opened its own container factory in Denmark. By 1993, it was the largest container line in the world.
