The cloud forests occur between 600 and 900 meters elevation on the larger Fijian islands and on Futuna. Rainfall is higher than the lowlands, exceeding 4500 mm per year in most areas. Temperatures are cooler, ranging from 10 to 20 °C.

Cloud forest is scattered above 600–900 m on the ridges and peaks of Fiji’s largest islands and is dominated by species such as tree ferns (Cyathea spp.), Dysoxylum gillespianum, Macaranga seemannii, and Leptopteris ferns with an abundance of climbing Freycinetia species.

A cloud forest, also called a water forest, primas forest, or tropical montane cloud forest, is a generally tropical or subtropical, evergreen, montane, moist forest characterized by a persistent, frequent or seasonal low-level cloud cover, usually at the canopy level, formally described in the International Cloud Atlas (2017) as silvagenitus.

Except at the lower elevational limits of cloud forest, common lowland species in Fiji do not generally penetrate into this zone. At 1 200 m elevation, unique trees include Ardisia brackenridgei, Dysoxylum lenticellare, Fagraea vitiensis and Weinmannia spp., and among the shrubs are Pipturus argenteus, Randia vitiensis and Scaevola floribunda .
