Union Pacific 844 is a class "FEF-3" 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad for its heritage fleet. Built in December 1944 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, No. 844 is one of four surviving FEF series locomotives and the only one in operation.

Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger.

Feb 26, 2025 · Union Pacific 844 is a 4-8-4 steam locomotive which the Union Pacific dubbed, originally enough, "Four-Eight-Fours" and classed them as such (Class FEF-1 through FEF-3).

These were designated Class FEF-1 and were designed by UP's Motive Power Group to have 77" drivers, 24.5 x 32 cylinders, a boiler pressure of 300 psi, and a weight of 465,000 lbs resulting in a tractive effort of 63,611 pounds (63,800 nominal).

FEF-3: New coreless motor design with dual brass flywheels for silky-smooth performance at all speeds, even slow crawls. FEF-3: Special cross-braced shock absorbers equalize the pressure on the locomotive drivers to maximize traction.

This HO Scale Class FEF-3 4-8-4 features full Paragon4 sound and DCC for realistic sound and motor control complete with back EMF for smooth slow speeds. The Paragon4 sound system works with all Broadway Limited Rolling Thunder (TM) advanced sound systems.

One special Union Pacific Northern still operates today: the legendary #844 FEF-3 4-8- 4. This engine holds the distinguished honor of being the only steamer never retired by a North American Class I railroad, and the last steam locomotive ever built for the Union Pacific.
