NEWFAST (c) is an additional stroke identification tool available for use. Copyrighted by Deborah Stabell Tran in 2017, (and created in 2016) as part of a DNP project, it was created to identify all types of strokes - anterior or posterior ischemic, and hemorrhagic strokes.

UCLA Fast Neuro improved ED throughput, reduced inpatient neurology consults from the ED, and decreased wait times for outpatient neurology appointments without using the inpatient neurology service for nonurgent consults.

Fast Neuro was built to reduce nonemergent neurologic care in the ED, improve outpatient neurology access, and avoid use of inpatient neurology services for nonemergent consults. The volume of referrals and neurology consults from the ED and wait time from referral to appointment were measured.

Wait time for an appointment was reduced by 82.5% (from more than a month to less than two weeks), and the number of nonemergent consults from the ED was reduced by 60%.

Use the acronym F.A.S.T. to recognize symptoms of a stroke and know when to call 911. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven or lopsided? Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Is speech slurred?
