Aug 20, 2017 · It was actually replaced with the Fast Box Blur, which is the GPU-accelerated version of the now obsolete effect. Gaussian Blur is the Premiere version with different math, so if you're looking for the classic Ae-style Fast Blur but faster, go Fast Box Blur.

The obsolete Fast Blur was used because in earlier versions of After Effects, the Gaussian Blur effect didn't incorporate any edge treatment and could cause transparent edges in the boundaries of the layer. Fast Blur effect had a parameter called Repeat Edge pixels to avoid this behavior.

They have changed how much the 'blurriness' slider actually blurs the image, but otherwise it's the same effect. 'Fast blur' at 65 blurriness is pixel-identical to 'gaussian blur' at 100 blurriness.

Feb 15, 2017 · Fast Blur is the same blur algorithm as Box Blur, with the Iterations parameter set to 3. Absolutely no difference. Same for the Gaussian Blur (Legacy) effect; the only difference between it and Fast Blur was the Repeat Edge Pixels parameter.
