The common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), also known as the European kestrel, Eurasian kestrel or Old World kestrel, is a species of predatory bird belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon family Falconidae.

Small falcon with distinctive male plumage: gray head, rusty back, gray tail with broad black tip. Female is brownish above, with barring on the back, wings, and tail. Note rather pointed wingtips (unlike rounded wings of Accipiter hawks), and distinct dark spotting on the breast.

Falco tin­nun­cu­lus is a wide­spread kestrel species, found through­out Eu­rope, Asia, and Africa. Its range spans from Great Britain to China and as far south as South Africa. In Eu­rope, F. tin­nun­cu­lus is mi­gra­tory and win­ters in south­ern Eu­rope and sub-sa­ha­ran Africa.
