The FN FNC (French: Fabrique Nationale Carabine) is a 5.56×45mm NATO assault rifle developed by the Belgian arms manufacturer FN Herstal and introduced in the late 1970s.

Development began with the FNC 76 prototype, followed by at least one updated prototype in the late 1970s, and finally went into common distribution in 1980 (the same year as the Miracle on Ice, The Empire Strikes Back, and Operation Eagle Claw).

Dec 1, 1998 · During 1974-76 FN redesigned the CAL into what we now know as the FNC. This was done for two reasons: 1) to compete in the 1976 Swedish arms tests and 1977-80 NATO cartridge evaluation trials; and, 2) to market a reliable 5.56mm rifle which could oppose the M16.

Nov 12, 2021 · The FNC (Fabrique Nationale Carabine) was FN’s followup to the unsuccessful CAL rifle. Chambered for the newly-adopted 5.56mm NATO cartridge, the FNC uses a long stroke gas piston system very reminiscent of the AK, combined with a stamped upper and milled aluminum lower.

Jan 8, 2013 · It replaced the more expensive FN CAL rifle and became the standard service rifle of Belgium in the late 80’s. It is still in service within the armed forces of Belgium, and licensed copies of the rifle are in service in Sweden as the AK5, and Indonesia as the Pindad SS1.

The FNC comes in a paratrooper model with the folding stock (in picture) and standard polycarbonite fixed stock. Both models have an integrated, notched, flip-up grenade-launching front site that automatically shunts gas, when popped up, to fire rifle grenades.
