G1 was an intermediate design, and was consequently replaced by the latest production model, the FAMAS G2, which appeared circa 1994. This rifle has the G1-style enlarged trigger guard but can accept only STANAG type (M16 -compatible) magazines.

May 27, 2020 · Further development of the rifle with an eye toward international sale led to the G1 pattern, with a 1:9 inch twist suited to the Belgian SS109 62 grain projectile adopted by NATO, as well as the use of NATO-standard magazines (specifically FNC magazines).

The soldiers of the European Federation Army are armed with the FAMAS G2, which involves a changed magwell to accept 30-round STANAG magazines, as well as the regular 25-round straight F1 magazines. The additions of a larger trigger guard was also added, as well as fibreglass handguards.
