After Richard Sainct's win on the F 650 RR in the 1999 Dakar Rally, a post-mortem on his bike showed that some of the components had only just made the distance or were showing signs of the very severe loads they had encountered. If the rally had lasted much longer these parts would have probably reached the limit of their reliable working life.

They used a Ohlins rear shock instead of the standard WP unit from the kit. the 43mm WP forks that came with the Touratech kit. Also note the Scotts steering dampener.

BMW F 650 RR PARIS-DAKAR. After more than ten years, BMW makes a comeback in the 'Dakar' with a factory team. Unlike the 1980s, the company now sends single-cylinder models based on the F 650 street enduro into the race. In the very first year of participating, Richard Sainct wins for BMW in 1999, and he also reaches the finish line first in 2000.

As a dual-sport bike, the Rotax 652cc single-cylinder motor was a dry-sump design, storing the oil in a separate tank as opposed to in the frame itself.

Mar 19, 2007 · You have to buy a whole bike and disassemble it to build a Touratech Rallye (designed by Richard Schalber from his experience in building the F650RR). These bikes while capable of doing Rallyes and the Dakar are no match for the KTM factory single bikes which have a better engine development program (top speed counts!).
