Produced by North American Aviation, the Sabre is best known as the United States' first swept-wing fighter that could counter the swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 in high-speed dogfights in the skies of the Korean War (1950–1953), fighting some of the earliest jet-to-jet battles in history.

The F-86F-40 (Japan) was considered one of the premier fighter aircraft of the day, several nations put bids in to receive surplus F-86 fighters to add to their arsenal. Japan successfully acquired this aircraft. However, due to the popularity of the aircraft, supplies evaporated.

The F-86F-40 was similar to an F-86F-25/30, but incorporated a modified wing, featuring a 30-centimeter (1-foot) wingtip extension on the "6-3" wing, plus restored leading-edge slats. This wing was logically known as the "F-40" wing.

The F-86 Sabre was developed in response to a 1944 request for a single-seat high-altitude fighter. The chief designer was Edgar Schmued, who had also designed the P-51 Mustang. The F-86 was derived from the design of the straight-wing FJ Fury series of Navy aircraft.
