The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II[N 1] is an American tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber that was developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy. [4] .

F-4J+ was the most basic, replacing the F-4's wings for improved fuel capacity and lift characteristics. F-4(FV)L furthered this, adding new high lift devices that allowed for greater bring-back weight.

US Marine Corps F-4S. The U.S. Marines received their first F-4Bs in June 1962, with the VMFA-314 Black Knights at MCAS El Toro, California becoming the first operational squadron. In addition to attack variants, the Marines also operated several tactical reconnaissance RF-4Bs.

The second production version of the Phantom developed for the Navy was the F-4J. This was a considerable improvement over the F-4B, and the F-4J could be visually distinguished from the earlier variant by its lack of an infrared sensor under the radome and by the larger exhaust nozzles on its engines.

The F-4J variants were specifically designed for the US Navy and Marine Corps and were the first fighter jets with look-down/shoot-down capability. Originally developed for the US Navy by McDonnell Aircraft, the F-4 Phantom II was introduced in 1960.

The F-4J was the final version of the Phantom to be placed in production for the US Navy and US Marine Corps. It was designed as the follow-on to the original Navy F-4B, correcting some of the deficiencies which had become apparent in service.

VMFA-333 was the last regular Marine squadron to operate the F-4 Phantom but finally transferred to the F/A-18 Hornet in October 1987.
