The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier-capable supersonic, twin-engine, tandem two-seat, twin-tail, all-weather-capable variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy 's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the General Dynamics-Grumman F-111B project.

The Tomcat is the only U.S. plane capable of carrying the long-range Phoenix missile, which can fire at targets from distances of about 80 miles. Armament also includes a mix of other air intercept missiles, rockets and bombs.

After an extensive development and testing phase, the F-14 Tomcat entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1974. It quickly gained a reputation as a formidable air superiority fighter, capable of engaging enemy aircraft with its long-range missiles and powerful onboard radar system.

Grumman F-14B “Tomcat” (Bureau # 162694; MSN #540) ~ The Tomcat hanging out at MAPS Air Museum was created by Grumman Aviation Corporation in Bethpage, New York in January of 1986 as an F-14A-140-GR and delivered to the US Navy on July 1, 1986.
