The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American single-engine, supersonic interceptor which was extensively deployed as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War.

F-104D. The F-104D version was build to train the F-104C pilots within the TAC. Next to the USAF also the Taiwanese Air Force has used this version. The F-104D was a two-seat combat trainer version of the F-104C. It was modified by having the nose wheel gear retract rearward and by removing the 20mm gun to make room for the second cockpit. The USAF procured 300 Starfighters, in addition, more than 1,700 F-104s were built for various allied nations.

Twenty-one F-104D’s were built and designed as a dual-control trainer version for the F-104C. Our Starfighter began its life in 1959 when the USAF acquired the aircraft and it was transferred to the 479th Tactical Fight Wing (TFW) at the George Air Force Base (AFB), California.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was the first operational interceptor capable of sustained speeds above Mach 2. Design work began in 1952 and the first test flights were flown in 1954. The F-104 was intended as a short-range point defense fighter with both single and two seat versions.

Dual-control trainers based on F-104D, but using the upgraded engine of the F-104G. No radar, and not combat-capable. Produced as interim trainers for the Luftwaffe. All F-104F aircraft were retired by 1971; 30 built.

The F-104D was the last version of the Starfighter to built for the USAF. 21 F-104Ds were delivered between November 1958 and August 1959. They all went to the four squadrons of the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing that had already been equipped with F-104Cs.
