The F-102 Delta Dagger first began to re-equip PACAF fighter interceptor squadrons in March 1959. By June 1960 five squadrons had received the F-102; the 4th FIS at Misawa AB, Japan, the 16th FIS at Naha AB, Okinawa, the 40th FIS at Yokota AB, Japan, the 68th FIS at Itazuke AB, Japan, and the 509th FIS at Clark AB, Philippines.

Air Force F-102 squadrons had been stationed in Thailand since 1961 and South Vietnam since March 1962. It was during this time that the Kennedy administration began building up a large US military presence in the region as a deterrent against North Vietnamese invasion.

Operating in Vietnam from 1962 until the summer of 1970, the "Delta Dagger" flew supersonic interceptor missions and provided combat air cover for our B-52s. In the early 1970s, the Air Force's front line squadrons began to re-equip with the McDonnell-Douglas F-4C "Phantom II."

The F-102 served in Vietnam, flying fighter patrols and serving as bomber escorts. A total of 15 aircraft were lost in Vietnam: one to air-to-air combat, several to ground fire and the remainder to accidents.

The F-102's supersonic, all-weather capabilities dated back to the Cold War era. The airframe was equipped with electronics and radar designed to locate and engage opposing forces, and its payload could include up to six guided missiles and 24 unguided 2.75-inch rockets.
