The EF88 improves close combat and general combat capability due to its superior accuracy and lethality, improved ergonomics, balance and increased mounting options for ancillary devices. The EF88 rifle can be quickly reconfigured to meet specific mission roles by utilising these ancillaries.

Manufactured in Australia, the F88 Austeyr rifle fires standard 5.56 x 45 millimetre ammunition. The F88 can be fitted with the different sights from the standard 1.5x sight, or the advanced combat optic gunsight (ACOG), and night weapon sights.

F88 AuSteyr - a derivative of the Austrian Steyr AUG STG-77 assault rifle. It is the ADF's standard individual weapon, which replaced the L1A1 SLR and supplanted the M-16 from front-line service in the late 1980s. The rifle is chambered for the 5.56 × 45 mm NATO cartridge.

The Steyr F88 is a gas operated, magazine fed, selective fire rifle using the bullpup stock configuration. The rifle is built around an aluminium receiver casting with steel reinforcement inserts.
