The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II is a twin-engined two-seat jet fighter and fighter bomber aircraft produced by the US-American manufacturer McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, later McDonnell Douglas Corporation.

British version used Rolls Royce Spey engines (F-4K, F-4N). Some Phantom versions were equipped with a Raytheon APG-65 radar with 100 km range. Internal armament M61A1 Vulcan 20 mm cannon with 640 rounds.

The two-place, twin-engine, all-weather supersonic F-4 Phantom II flew at Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound), and could carry a payload of up to 16,000 pounds of bombs, rockets, missiles and guns. Each aircraft had 54,197 feet of wiring and 643,000 fasteners holding it together.

The F-4C version was developed specifically for the Air Force and was externally similar to the Navy F-4B, including the tailhook. Differences included full dual controls, low pressure tires and deeper wheel wells, anti-skid braking, revised radar systems, and a refueling boom receptacle.

The engines have provision for both assisted pneumatic start at fields with an available cart, or via a propellant cartridge to initiate spin-up.

The F-4E is essentially an F-4D with improved J79-GE-17 engines (900 pounds more static sea level thrust each) and an M61A1 "Vulcan" 20mm cannon. Operational experience gained in Vietnam had a direct influence on the addition of the cannon.
