Eupolis was one of the leading Athenian poets of the vigorous and satirical Old Comedy, and a rival of Aristophanes. Eupolis grew up during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, and his first play was produced in 429 bc.

Dec 18, 2003 · Eupolis (fl. 429–411 BC) was one of the best-attested of Aristophanes' rivals, and a major figure in the history of Athenian comedy. No complete work by this lost master has survived, but of his fourteen plays we have 500 fragments. These include 120 lines of his best-known comedy, Demoi (The Demes), which were discovered and published in 1911.

Eupolis’ most famous play, Demoi, rightfully receives St.’s longest treatment (111-174). His reconstruction of what happened in the play — a matter still fraught with many uncertainties — is in general convincing: he sensibly argues against the identification of the play’s common-man hero Pyronides with the general Myronides, 116-121 ...

The chief characteristic of the poetry of Eupolis seems to have been the liveliness of his fancy, and the power which he possessed of imparting its images to the audience.

Eupolis was regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Old Comedy (e.g. Hor. Sat. 1. 4. 1). His first play was produced in 429 bce (Anon. De Com. 9 p. 7); he won three victories at the *Lenaea and at least one at the City *Dionysia (IG 22. 2325. 59, 126).

Eupolis was especially fond of bringing real people on stage as characters in his dramas and making the comedy turn on the comic possibilities they presented.
