May 6, 2014 · Eti Wade is an artist and academic. Her art practice is a personal investigation of the limits of maternal subjectivity expressed through photography and video and she also writes on the subject of the maternal gaze in contemporary photographic art.

Eti Wade’s artistic practice has been focused on the maternal since the birth of her middle son in 2000. Her work has been exhibited and is held in collections in the UK and USA. She is currently completing her doctoral thesis ‘The mother as subject and author in contemporary visual art’. www.etiwade.com

In the works, Wade combines video footage from the (hospital) birth of her second son in 2001 with domestic scenes, juxtaposing the drama of the birth experience with detached images of the domestic, alluding to a deadening of emotions sometimes experienced in PND.

In a growing literature on maternal art there is relatively little written on Eti Wade, despite what I argue is the importance of her work to discourses of maternal wellbeing. There is more detailed discussion of Lena Simic’s practice and my aim is to extend this by reading the work of both artists through the voices of my research participants.
