The MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40) is a submachine gun chambered for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge. Developed in Nazi Germany, it saw extensive service in the Axis forces during World War II.

Maschinenpistole 40, SMG The Erfurter Maschinenfabrik (ERMA) was a German weapons manufacturer founded in 1922 by Berthold Geipel. Prior to and during World War II it manufactured many firearms, including the Karabiner 98k, the MP40 and other submachine guns.

There were three main companies manufacturing the MP40 for the Heeres Waffenamt (Army Armament): Erma, Steyr and Haenel. Steyr manufactured the majority of the MP40 submachine guns and production continued at the company unitl 1944. Erma who also manufactured the MP38, produced the MP40 until 1943.

The Maschinenpistole 40, commonly known as the MP40, is similar to the Thompson, but uses a smaller 9-mm round. This submachine gun evolved out of the MP38, which was prone to misfirings that had sometimes lethal results.

Both MP38 and MP40 submachine guns are blowback operated weapons that fire from an open bolt. Both weapons were fully-automatic only, but a relatively slow rate of fire permitted single shots with short trigger pulls.
