Epikarst - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
The epikarst —the skin of the karst—is the thin zone near the karst surface. It includes the solutionally modified (karren) bedrock surface and the overlying and included regolith. Some authors include dolines as part of the epikarst. The epikarst frequently supports a perched aquifer and serves to retard and store infiltrating rainwater.

Oct 12, 2012 · The epikarst (also known as the subcutaneous zone) comprises highly weathered carbonate bedrock immediately beneath the surface or beneath the soil (when present) or exposed at the surface.

The epikarst is the shallow, superficial part of karst areas, in which climate, tree roots and karst processes fracture and enlarge rock joints and cracks, creating a more permeable zone...

Jan 1, 2004 · Epikarst is the uppermost weathered zone of carbonate rocks with substantially enhanced and more homogeneously distributed porosity and permeability, as compared to the bulk rock mass below; a regulative subsystem that functions to store, split into several components and temporally distribute authogenic infiltration recharge to the vadose zone.

Dec 10, 2013 · Epikarst is a weathered zone of enhanced porosity on or near the surface or at the soil/bedrock contact of many karst landscapes. The epikarst is essentially the upper boundary of a karst system but is also a reaction chamber where many organics accumulate and react with the percolating water.
Epikarst: the soil–rock interface in karst - Oxford Academic
Sep 18, 2014 · Epikarst is a nearly ubiquitous component of karst areas, which cover about 12.5 % of the earth’s surface. Epikarst is the site of most of the water storage above the water table, and an important shallow subterranean habitat.
