Dec 22, 2022 · For any history lovers out there the Caminho Real da Encumeada is known as one of the King’s Paths in Madeira. Back in the mid-1800s, the Caminho Real da Encumeada was created by the king’s order and was used by him and specific people to get around the island.

The Encumeada Pass sits between the two deep-cleft valleys that almost slice Madeira in two. From this dramatic point 1083m up, you can see both the north and south coastlines. It's also the starting point for several hikes and long-distance trails. A tunnel under Encumeada means 99% of traffic now bypasses the pass.
