Since 1989, El Pomar has gone beyond grant making to contribute to the success and vitality of communities and nonprofits throughout Colorado through our leadership development and community engagement programs.

In 1992, El Pomar Foundation — established by the Penroses — purchased, re-named, and designated Penrose House as an education and conference center for Colorado’s nonprofit sector. Penrose House was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Through El Pomar, their philanthropic legacy endures. El Pomar supports nonprofits and government entities in the areas of arts and culture, civic and community initiatives, education, health, and human services.

Since 1937, El Pomar has made more than 25,000 grants all over the state of Colorado to over 5,000 nonprofits. Over thirty years ago, El Pomar’s Trustees realized we could also contribute more than grant dollars to support the success and vitality of communities and nonprofits throughout Colorado.

William J. Hybl is Chair Emeritus and charter member of the board of Trustees of El Pomar Foundation, after serving 30 years as Chairman and CEO. In 2008 Hybl was confirmed by the United States Senate as Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Public Diplomacy, a position he was appointed to by President George W. Bush.

Our competitive process is how most El Pomar grants are made, but we also have a number of individual funds for specific focus areas and/or geography. In addition, we fund program, general operating support, and capital grants, so clarify in advance which of these your request will fit.
